Orientation Day
2012 Yr7 Transition Day
Grade 6 students from our feeder schools experienced an orientation day on the 13/12/11, to assist them through their transition into year 7 2012. At Numurkah Secondary College the Year 7 Coordinator and teachers are committed to ensuring the transition from primary to secondary school is a positive experience for students and parents.

While exciting, the step from primary to secondary school for many students and their families can be quite daunting. At the start of 2012 our new Yr7 students become part of a much bigger school community where they are confronted with many new challenges. They need to cope with; a student population, a wider range of subjects, new teachers, a new more complex timetable, making new friends and an increased need to be organised and independent. In light of this we aim to provide a transition program that ensures a happy and smooth transition into their secondary school education.
There are many components to the College's Transition Program which include; transition team visits to the major feeder primary schools to explain the school program and to deal with questions and concerns of future students and a number of transition days throughout the year, where Grade 6 students receive a guided tour and participate in various classroom activities to become faimliar with the College layout. An Information Evening is held later in the year in the form of an Open Curriculum Evening is held during which parents are; introduced to key personnel at NSC, find out about the curriculum and organisational structures of the school and have the opportunity to ask questions about School policies and procedures. The Junior Sub School Leader visits primary schools towards the end of the school year to discuss individual student progress with Grade 6 teachers and Co-ordinators. Most appropriate student class placement is also discussed with the Grade 6 teachers. A Transition Education Package for all new enrolments is provided to parents.
The main feature of the Transition Program is to link the year 7 group to their new Year Level Coordinator and Yr7 teachers, who will provide ongoing support to each individual as they cope with the many changes. The transition program also allows teachers to get to know the students before they actually start at the school and for the students to feel more confident. The Year 7 Coordinator, along with the Welfare Coordinator, provides support to every Year 7 student. The Coordinator deals with the day-to-day issues associated with life in Year 7. The transition day on the 13th of December provided students with the opportunity to mix with one another and their new teachers. Students experienced a taste of what a normal day will be like for them at the start of 2012, their timetablethe included; Maths, English, Music, Science, Humanities, Physical Education or Art. Students and teachers alike enjoyed the day and are looking forward to 2012 with a sense of excitement.
